HSA COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE'S SCOTT MOSAK EARNS USGBC'S LEED ACCREDITATION FOR "GREEN" BUILDING EFFORTS

March 21, 2008

(Chicago – March 21, 2008) Christine Muszynski, executive vice president and director of management operations at HSA Commercial Real Estate, announced that Scott Mosak, senior property manager, has earned his LEED Professional Accreditation given by the U.S. Green Building Council for advanced educational classroom work and demonstrating a thorough understanding of green building techniques.

Mosak, 39, joined HSA in 2002 and heads the team that manages six of the University of Chicago’s properties in the Hyde Park neighborhood that total over 506,000 square feet. Over the past several years, he has implemented various “green” initiatives, with a focus on energy efficiency, at one of the University’s buildings located at 1155 East 60th Street, which has had a tremendous impact on energy savings and eco-friendly changes for this 1950’s structure. These improvements have helped the University of Chicago promote “green” policies in existing older office buildings in the Hyde Park area.

Mosak became involved in this movement because of a desire to both decrease operating costs for his clients as well as doing something positive for the environment. “Since buildings in the U.S. annually consume huge amounts of energy,” commented Mosak, “I felt that increasing the efficiencies of building systems would provide for better HVAC operations, better thermal comfort for the building occupants, while at the same time doing something good for the planet. It became a win-win situation for all concerned.”

Going forward, Mosak plans to continue his efforts and research and implement technologies, products and practices that are eco-friendly, good for people’s health, as well as good for the landlord’s bottom line. “We are very proud of the hard work and dedication Scott has put in toward bringing 1155 East 60th Street up-to-date,” said Muszynski. “as well as the additional volunteer classroom study and learning process that went into obtaining this prestigious accreditation. As one of the largest property owners in the nation, we at HSA will certainly benefit from Scott’s expertise and guidance in the future, and we congratulate him on this achievement.”

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality.
