Jack Shaffer, chairman and founder, and Bob Smietana, CEO, of HSA Commercial Real Estate were recognized again on the Crain’s Chicago Business list of “Who’s Who in Chicago Business” for 2010. The annual list acknowledges corporate, cultural, and political leaders who make a significant impact in the Chicago business community as well as with civic and professional organizations.
“Both Jack and I were honored to be acknowledged with such influential and distinguished individuals,” Smietana said. “We are grateful for the recognition of HSA Commercial’s position as a leader in the Chicago business and real estate communities.”
Jack Shaffer founded HSA Commercial in 1981 and has been active in the development and acquisition of commercial real estate for 40 years. He has been directly involved in the construction and development of more than 50 million square feet of industrial, retail and office space; and in the acquisition of over 100,000 acres for the development of business parks, shopping centers and industrial properties. Some of Mr. Shaffer’s projects include the development of the 63 acre Broadview Village Square, the 300 acre Kensington Business Center, the 550 acre Turnberry Lakes International Business Park, three Covington Corporate Center business parks totaling over 300 acres, the 10 acre Oakbrook Terrace Office Park, the 33 acre Highland Oaks Office Park, the 30 acre Opus West Office Park and the 1,200 acre Governors Gateway Industrial Park.
Mr. Shaffer has completed hundreds of transactions with the largest of national and international companies such as: Nestle, Siemens, Goodyear, Carrier Corporation, J&L Steel Co., Phillips, Motorola, International Paper, FedEx, DHL, US Steel, ITW, DuPont, BP, Dow, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, Target, Mitsubishi, Sony, etc.
Bob Smietana has completed over 60 building developments comprising over 20,000,000 square feet valued at over $1.0 billion. Mr. Smietana’s diverse development experience, which began in 1978 as an architect, includes industrial buildings, shopping centers, hotels, suburban and high-rise urban office skyscrapers, senior housing and medical office buildings. His national experience has included all phases of real estate responsibility including land acquisitions, entitlements, design development, financing, construction management operations, property and asset management and brokerage.
Bob Smietana serves on the Board of Directors of Chicago Commons, a 100 year old social service organization, is Adjunct Professor in The College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), is a Director of the University of Illinois Real Estate Alumni Forum, is a founding member of the University of Illinois’ School of Architecture Professional Partners Committee and serves as an elected official on the Village of Kenilworth Board of Trustees and is a member of the Plan Commission. He is a former Director of the Great Northern Savings Bank.
